UK Immigration shifts to evisas from July 2025: What you need to know
The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) department is making a major change: by July 15, 2025, physical immigration documents like passport vignettes(a sticker in the passport that verifies authorization to enter and remain in the UK) and Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) will be replaced with digital eVisas. This move is part of the UK government’s plan to streamline the immigration system and enhance security through digital processes. If you’re planning to live, study, or work in the UK after this date, here’s what you need to know.
What is an eVisa?
An eVisa is a digital record of your immigration status stored securely online which eliminates the need for physical proof. The information related to your visa such as your identity, immigration status and condition of your status can be access through your UKVI account.
Who it affects?
- International students applying for visas starting from July 15, 2025
- Skilled workers and other long-term visa holders applying from that date
- Those with visas extending beyond December 31, 2024 (as BRPs will no longer be valid beyond that point)
What you need to do?
If your UK work or study visa application is submitted and paid for on or after 15 July 2025, follow these steps:
- Create a UKVI account after receiving your decision (if you don’t already have one)
- Access your eVisa online through your UKVI account
- Ensure your passport information is accurate and kept up to date
- Present your eVisa when required, such as at border control or for employer/university check

What About Dependants and Other Visas?
Dependants of work or study visa holders will continue to receive a physical vignette. Visit, family, or other visa types are not included in this change yet.
